Digital Preservation of Intellectual Property in Aligarh Muslim University using Dspace: A Work Model.

Abstract

The growth of electronic publishing techniques and developments in open source software (OSS) movement has made the digital preservation of academic outputs an easy task. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is one of the premier institutes of higher education in modern India. The present paper discusses the pre-requisites and basic components of an institutional repository and gives guidelines for the digital preservation of intellectual property of AMU using the DSpace, an open-source software for institutional repository. The paper provides a detailed guide for installation and customization of the software and dissemination of the intellectual output of the AMU community through LAN, CAN and Internet. Copy right issue is one of the burning topics among the information managers, especially in the context of open access movement. An attempt has been made to provide clarity on this topic and discuss some available regulations regarding copy right aspects of depositing in institutional repository. The paper presents a work model for AMU repository and discusses the limitations and difficulties for the implementation of the project and finally concludes with some suggestions.
