Digital Preservation of Intellectual Property in Aligarh Muslim University using Dspace: A Work Model.

Abstract

The growth of electronic publishing techniques and developments in open source software (OSS) movement has made the digital preservation of academic outputs an easy task. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is one of the premier institutes of higher education in modern India. The present paper discusses the pre-requisites and basic components of an institutional repository and gives guidelines for the digital preservation of intellectual property of AMU using the DSpace, an open-source software for institutional repository. The paper provides a detailed guide for installation and customization of the software and dissemination of the intellectual output of the AMU community through LAN, CAN and Internet. Copy right issue is one of the burning topics among the information managers, especially in the context of open access movement. An attempt has been made to provide clarity on this topic and discuss some available regulations regarding copy right aspects of depositing in institutional repository. The paper presents a work model for AMU repository and discusses the limitations and difficulties for the implementation of the project and finally concludes with some suggestions.

Online News Paper Reading Habits

Online News Paper Reading Habits among PhD Students and Faculty Members in Aligarh Muslim University

Abstract

Defines online and web newspaper and discuss the features and limitations of digital version of this light reading material. The study reveals majority of the students and faculty members of Aligarh Muslim University are online readers and many of them prefer their regional languages - Hindi and Urdu. Respondents from other than Northern India prefer their own respective mother tongue. The problem of regional language character display is reduced over years. Features like video clips and audio attachments are interesting features of online news papers. Instant news updates makes the online news papers more attractive to the readers. The favorite item in online newspaper is the local news and reports among the respondents.
The data for this study was collected through a questionnaire distributed among the university faculty members and PhD students. The empirical research design and random sampling technique was applied to select the sample.

Digital Library Initiatives in Science and Techonology Libraries in Malabar Area of Kerala (India): A Survey

Recent Developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have given birth to a number of digital libraries. The development of digital libraries is going on with the significant change in the creation, access, use and management of information.In the present era the information is not only to be considered as a resource but also it is a product and basic need of the world. Apart from the conventional form of information sources, there is digital form too. The rapid growth of communication and computer technology opened the doors to store and disseminate information digitally. Now the colleges, universities, and research organizations are starting to build digital depositories for the intellectual output of their institutions and the digital libraries became one of the essential part of any institution especially in Science and Technology. This study look into the present status of initiatives taken by various science and technology libraries in kerala. The result shows that most of the libraries have collection of digital materials but systematic organisation is not implemented yet some initiatives have begun. Abstract

Information and Communication Technology is an integral part of modern libraries and library services. Islamic libraries are one of the special libraries in Kerala organized and maintained by Arabic / Islamic colleges or organizations. This paper discusses the need, scope, prerequisites and limitations of ICT application in Islamic libraries and peep into the present scenario of these libraries. It put forward some suggestions for the further development in information and communication technology application.

Abstract
This paper discusses the role of libraries in electronic publishing as a recent development and new opportunity to promote the socio-economic development of scholar community. The OSS provides an opportunity to the libraries to play as an electronic publisher in internet era. Methods of electronic publishing such as online publishing, institutional repositories, digital archiving, blogging, web 2.0 application etc. are mentioned. This paper provides details about open source electronic publishing software like, DPubs, GNU Eprint, Hyper Journal and OJS. Some challenges for the electronic publishing to be faced by the library professionals when they move towards electronic publishing such as technology skill, copy right issues and privacy matters are discussed in detail.
